HYTRIN

Terazosin, is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It helps to lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels so that blood passes through them more easily.

Terazosin is also used to treat benign enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia - BPH). Terazosin helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms. However, this medicament will not help shrink the prostate. The prostate may continue to grow. This may cause the symptoms to become worse over time. Therefore, even though terazosin may lessen the problems caused by enlarged prostate now, surgery still may be needed in the future.

If you have high blood pressure, you must take terazosin regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication; and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Terazosin does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control.

SIDE EFFECTS: Besides postural hypotension and dizziness, the rare reported side effects are weakness, fatigue, headaches, swelling (edema), palpitations, nasal congestion, sleepiness, decreased libido, impotence, and blurred vision.
