Pimozide - generic Orap - is used to control tics (unusual movements or sounds that the patient may be able to hold back for a short time but cannot really control) caused by Tourette's disorder. Pimozide should only be used in patients who cannot take other medications or who have taken other medications without good results. Orap should only be used to treat severe tics that stop the patient from learning, working, or performing normal activities. Pimozide is in a class of medications called antipsychotics. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Orap will not completely cure the tics, but will help to reduce their number and severity.

SIDE EFFECTS: Dry mouth, drowsiness, headache, stomach upset, change in appetite, or sleeplessness may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to Orap. Blurred vision, change in sex drive, nervousness, muscle cramps, behavior changes, or menstrual changes may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Notify your doctor immediately of: mental confusion, difficulty speaking, sweating, tremors, drooling, stiff muscles, difficulty walking, unusual eye movements, chest pain, increased body heat, abnormal tongue/face/jaw movements (puffing cheeks, chewing, puckering mouth), seizures. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: dizziness, fainting, irregular heartbeat.
